Title : Factors associated with HIV in men who have sex with men in the Republic of the Congo

Abstract

HIV / AIDS infection remains a major public health problem in the world in general and in Sub-Saharan Africa in particular. The purpose of this study is to determine factors associated with HIV in men who have sex with men. Methods : This was an analytical cross-sectional study carried out in 2017 among men who have sex with men aged 18 and over in Brazzaville and Pointe-Noire in the Republic of Congo. Respondant Driven Sampling (RDS) was used for sample collection, a pre-established survey sheet collected data on socio-demographic characteristics and HIV-related risks from each participant who consented to participate in the study. Five (05) mL of whole blood is collected in an EDTA tube for HIV serological analysis. SPSS.2.1R software was used for the statistical analysis. Results : A total of 182 men who have sex with men are included in the study with a prevalence of 41.2%. Three factors are associated with HIV infection ; age between 25 and 29 years (OR = 2.1; CI = 1.06 - 4.17; p = 0.03), the out-of-school (OR = 3.1; CI = 1.48 - 6.34; p = 0.03) and the preference for men (OR = 2.93; CI = 1.21 - 7.07; p = 0.017). Conclusion : This study demonstrates the need to develop new strategies to prevent and treat HIV infection in this segment of the population. Potential high impact interventions may include HIV awareness and testing activities. Keywords : Associated factors, HIV, MSM.
