Patients' perceived prosthodontic treatment needs
Abstract
A good prosthodontic result is not just about disease treatment and oral rehabilitation; patients’ expectations are equally important. Thus, patient-reported treatment needs before prosthodontic treatment are essential to enhance overall success. The main aim of this study was to assess patients' perceived prosthodontic treatment needs using a developed tool (PPTN). The objectives are to assess the patient’s perceived psychosocial impact, aesthetic concern, and function before treatment. A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on patients seeking prosthodontic treatment from the Restorative Dentistry Clinic, Faculty of Dentistry, UKM. Informed consent was obtained from participants during the initial consultation visit. The developed questionnaire (PPTN) was distributed to 193 participants using a convenience sampling method. The participants answered the questionnaire based on three perceived prosthodontic treatment need factors (psychosocial impact, aesthetic concern, and function). All analyses were performed using SPSS 25.0 (IBM, New York, NY, USA). Participants self-rated their prosthodontic treatment needs based on three domains: function, 61.1% (n= 118); aesthetic concern, 55.4% (n=107); psychosocial impact, 51.8% (n= 100). Most of the participants, 82% (n=159), answered the item(Q15) that they felt discomfort due to food stuck between their teeth. More than half of the participants, 58% (n= 112), felt that their teeth were not attractive(Q12) and not confident because of teeth or mouth(Q7). Overall, participants with a higher total score for the first 15 questions rated themselves as having a higher need for prosthodontic treatment (P<0.01). PPTN is a valuable tool for a better understanding patients' perceived treatment needs before commencing any prosthodontic treatment.
