Experience report: Development and application of a mobile application to support clinical decision-making and evidence-based medical education
Abstract
Introduction: The rapid expansion of digital technologies in healthcare has driven the development of mobile applications, wearable devices, and telemedicine systems as tools to support clinical practice and medical education. These resources facilitate quick access to updated information, assisting in evidence-based decision-making, especially in contexts such as medical training, internships, and clinical shifts. In this scenario, mobile health applications (mHealth) emerge as solutions capable of integrating scientific knowledge, clinical algorithms, and decision-making flows within accessible digital environments.
Objective: To report the experience of developing and applying a mobile application designed for medical students and physicians, focusing on the integration of clinical protocols, decision algorithms, and summaries of evidence-based guidelines, with potential use in telemedicine contexts and future integration with health wearable devices.
Experience Report: This study presents an experience report regarding the creation of a health education mobile application developed to support active learning and evidence-based clinical decision-making. The application was designed to function as an intuitive digital platform that integrates interactive clinical protocols, decision-making flowcharts, diagnostic algorithms, and updated summaries of medical guidelines. During the development process, efforts were made to structure the content in an accessible and dynamic format, allowing students and healthcare professionals to quickly consult relevant information in both academic and clinical contexts, such as classes, internships, and medical shifts. The proposal also includes the possibility of integration with telemedicine systems, facilitating remote discussion of clinical cases and shared access to management protocols. Additionally, the application was conceived considering emerging trends in digital health, including potential integration with wearable devices capable of monitoring vital signs. This feature may expand the tool’s applicability to remote clinical monitoring and real-time medical decision support. Another relevant aspect of this experience was the concern with democratizing access to medical knowledge. By providing updated content in a digital format, the application contributes to reducing educational barriers, particularly in regions with limited access to updated educational materials. Furthermore, replacing printed materials with a continuous digital platform promotes greater sustainability and reduces environmental impact.
Conclusion: The development of the application demonstrated the potential of digital technologies to strengthen medical education and support evidence-based clinical practice. mHealth tools associated with telemedicine systems and, in the future, wearable health devices can expand access to knowledge, optimize clinical decision-making, and contribute to improving the quality of healthcare. Moreover, these technologies may promote greater equity in access to health information. Experiences such as this reinforce the role of technological innovation in transforming medical training and modernizing healthcare systems.
Biography
Ana Beatriz Pereira Riotinto is a medical student at the Parnaíba Valley Higher Education Institute (IESVAP), starting in 2022. She works in various areas of medical training, including research, outreach, tutoring, and scientific production. She was a scholarship holder and volunteer in scientific initiation projects in the areas of infectious diseases, dermatology, and maternal and child health. She participated in outreach initiatives focused on elderly health, child health, and health education. She served as a tutor for the Teaching-Service-Community Integration (IESC I and IV) and the Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE). She is currently president of the Academic League of Sports Medicine and Nutrology (LAMEN). She has published articles in scientific journals and has written book chapters. She has presented papers at national and international conferences and symposia, receiving honorable mentions and awards, such as for the "Corpo em Jogo" project (2025) and in the area of public health (2023). During high school, she won a bronze medal at the Piauiense Chemistry Olympiad. Ana Beatriz is interested in preventive medicine, research, public health, and sports medicine, pursuing constant technical and scientific development and a commitment to comprehensive and humanized healthcare education.
