Insertion of the Intrauterine Device (IUD) in primary care: experiences and challenges in nursing
Abstract
Considering that reproductive planning is a fundamental axis of women’s health and that the IUD, despite its high effectiveness, still presents low adherence and unequal access in Primary Health Care, it is justified to report professional experiences that contribute to qualifying this practice and strengthening women’s reproductive autonomy. Therefore, this study aims to describe the experience of a nurse in IUD insertion in a Primary Care Unit, as well as the experience of nursing students during a supervised internship in Primary Health Care, observing care practices, service organization, and educational processes. To this end, a descriptive, qualitative study was conducted, in the form of an experience report, based on direct observation of consultations, participation in procedures, and monitoring of institutional routines over 405 internship hours. In this way, it was observed that nurse training, humanized care, health education, and institutional support are essential for safe IUD insertion, resulting in high user satisfaction and strengthened access to the method. These findings allow us to conclude that qualified nurse performance in Primary Health Care expands the availability of long-acting contraception, promotes equity, and contributes to comprehensive and ethical care reproductive consolidating grounded in women’s autonomy.
