Prone breast setup and treatment in radiation therapy

Abstract

Breast radiation therapy continues to evolve with the goal to maintain excellent tumor control while minimizing radiation exposure to surrounding normal tissues. Prone breast radiation therapy is an important treatment approach that can provide dosimetry and clinical advantages for selected patients in whom the prone position may reduce exposure to heart and lungs. This review provides radiation therapists and other oncology professionals with a practical overview of prone breast setup, simulation, treatment planning, and delivery.

In this context, breast anatomy, breast cancer epidemiology, staging, and the role of genetic testing in contemporary breast cancer management, as well as patient selection based on their anatomy, breast size, tumor location, and the relationship of the breast to surrounding organs at risk will be reviewed. Prone versus supine breast radiation therapy will be compared, including potential advantages, limitations, and clinical considerations associated with these two positions.

Prone breast immobilization system and patient setup as well as following the patient from simulation through treatment planning and radiation treatment delivery, the role of radiation therapist in delivering consistent treatment throughout the course of therapy will be discussed.

Biography

An accomplished radiation therapy professional and educator, she has held faculty and leadership positions since 2009. She has served as Program Director and adjunct faculty at several institutions, alongside leadership roles in Radiation Oncology. She holds an EdD, MS, MBA, and RT qualifications, and was recognized for Oncology leadership in 2026.
