Presentation Title:

Bacterial analysis and culture of stethoscopes from physicians in Primary Health Care Units (PHC)

Abstract

Objective: To perform bacterial analysis and culture on stethoscopes of physicians working in basic health units in the city of XXX.

Methodology: Samples were collected from stethoscopes used by physicians who provide care in Basic Health Units (UBS's) in the city of XXX. First, the culture medium was prepared and then the collected samples were seeded and the growth of microorganisms was observed in an incubator, where the bacterial colonies developed in the culture medium. Thus, the smear of the samples was obtained to perform Gram staining and then the slides were analyzed under the microscope.

Results: Twelve strains were isolated, of which eight were Gram-positive Cocci, two Gram-negative Bacilli and two Gram-positive Bacilli. After the identification tests, it was found that the Gram-positive cocci belonged to the genus Staphylococcus sp., while the Gram-positive bacilli belonged to the genus Bacillus sp. and the Gram negative bacilli were of the non-fermenting type, of the species Achromobacter xylosoxidans.

Conclusion: The results of this study highlight the presence of different bacterial genera, including Staphylococcus sp., Bacillus sp. and Achromobacter, in stethoscopes of physicians in the UBS. These bacteria, some of which are potentially pathogenic and associated with nosocomial infections, reinforce the importance of adequate hygiene of medical equipment as an essential measure to prevent healthcare associated infections and ensure greater safety in the clinical environment.
