The experiences of nursing students about using narratives to mobilize nursing theories and models in education activities: A qualitative systematic review

Studies investigating the experiences of nursing students using narratives in their education reveal several significant insights into their learning processes and professional identity formation. Through narrative pedagogy, nursing students engage in sharing and interpreting their personal and clinical experiences, allowing them to mobilize nursing theories and models in education activities. Further, the implementation of narrative pedagogy in nursing education is beneficial for healthcare system, as it effectively prepares the students for the complexities of modern nursing practice and supports evidence-based practice.
Aim of the study

To aggregate knowledge on nursing students’ experiences of using narratives to mobilize nursing theories and models in education activities.
Methods
A meta-synthesis was conducted using JBI’s meta-aggregative approach. A systematic search was carried out in December 2024, on the scientific databases: EBSCOhost (CINAHL Ultimate, MEDLINE Ultimate), Virtual Health Library, LILACS, Scopus and Web of Science. The articles were independently reviewed by two authors, who assessed the quality, extraction and synthesis of the data.

Results
With duplicates removed, a total of 675 records were screened against the eligibility criteria. A total of 8 articles were included in the final synthesis. Preliminary analysis shows that the use of narratives in nursing education support students’ critical reflection and strengthen their understanding of theoretical concepts in relation to practical experiences.

Conclusion and/or topics for further discussion
The use of narratives as a pedagogical tool in nursing education appears to facilitate a critical reflective and engaging learning environment, promoting the development of professional identity and critical thinking skills among nursing students. Further, critical reflection skills and linking theory to practice is determinant for the development of nursing education and science in relation to motivate evidence-based practice.
