Post-COVID-19 sequelae and their impact on the functional status of patients: Experience in a family medicine unit in the State of Mexico
Abstract
Objective:
To describe the functional sequelae in patients who presented some type of post-COVID-19 complication.
To describe the functional sequelae in patients who presented some type of post-COVID-19 complication.
Methods:
A cross-sectional, analytical, and descriptive study was conducted at Family Medicine Unit No. 220 of the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) in Toluca, State of Mexico. Using a non-probabilistic sampling method, a sample of 117 patients was obtained. The data collection period spanned from June to December 2021. To assess the functional outcomes, the Post-COVID-19 Functional Status Scale (PCFS) was applied. The study received approval from the Ethics and Research Committee. Data were analyzed using the SPSS version 26 statistical package.

Results and Conclusions:
The initial severity of COVID-19 does not consistently predict whether a patient will experience functional sequelae that affect their daily life. Family physicians should take into account individual patient factors, educate patients about the potential variability of post-COVID complications, adopt a multidisciplinary care approach, and ensure continuous follow-up to manage long-term impacts effectively.
