Presentation Title:

Consumption of sugary drinks in adolescents

Abstract

Sugary drinks are those that contain high amounts of added sugar. They include various beverages such as carbonated drinks, energy drinks, juices, dairy drinks, fruit drinks, and sports drinks. Due to their high prevalence and negative impact on health—especially among adolescents—the consumption of these beverages has been classified as a public health problem. Previous studies have identified, in a fragmented manner, environmental and behavioral factors that could influence the consumption of these types of drinks. However, due to the limited scope of these approaches, there is still a need for evidence to determine the predisposing, reinforcing, and enabling factors related to the consumption of sugary drinks among adolescents aged 13 to 17. This study is relevant as its results will serve as a baseline for formulating public health policies, strategies, and programs, specifically for this population group. These efforts aim to promote the adoption of healthy lifestyles and behavioral changes in order to discourage consumption and prevent the harmful effects on adolescent health. It is expected that this research will contribute to achieving Sustainable Development Goal 3, “Good Health and Well-being,” by providing evidence to support informed decision-making and the implementation of effective interventions for this population.
