Experience report: Establishment of an academic league of scientific research and its impact on medical and scientific training in a medical school in Brazil
Abstract
The creation of academic leagues represents a milestone in the education of medical students, fostering scientific, technical, and humanistic development. This report presents the experience of establishing the Academic League of Scientific Research (LAPC) at a medical school in Paraná, Brazil, in 2024, highlighting its challenges, impacts, and contributions to medical education. LAPC emerged from the need to structure a formal space for learning and practicing scientific research, promoting training in methodology, data analysis, and academic production. Comprising 25 members and five preceptors, the league engages in scientific projects, literature reviews, epidemiological studies, and encourages publication in indexed journals and conference proceedings. Additionally, it aims to integrate research with teaching and healthcare, bringing students closer to clinical and epidemiological realities through applied studies. The experience revealed that the creation and participation in LAPC significantly contribute to the humanistic and technical formation of students. Immersion in research strengthens critical thinking, autonomy, and evidence-based decisionmaking skills, which are essential for qualified medical practice. Moreover, interdisciplinarity and teamwork create an environment for academic and professional growth. The implementation of LAPC demonstrated that medical education should not be limited to traditional teaching but should incorporate research as a central axis of learning. The league’s continuity and evolution suggest that initiatives like this have the potential to transform medical education, encouraging scientific inquiry and preparing future doctors for a more critical, ethical, and evidence-based practice.
