Beyond the surface: Probing factors fueling significant drug abuse in Pakistan
Abstract
Background: The issue of drug abuse in Pakistan is a complex challenge influenced by various demographic, socio-economic, and psychological factors. This research aims to delve into the depths of drug addiction beyond surface-level observations, employing comprehensive data analysis to explore the underlying factors contributing to this phenomenon.
Methods: A cross-sectional quantitative study was conducted from February 2021 to June 2021, utilizing a pre-tested questionnaire from Fountain House and Ehsas Clinic in Lahore, Pakistan. Data was collected and analyzed using SPSS version 26.
Results: The study highlights a predominantly young demographic, with over 60% under 30 years old and a notable male majority. Educationally, most participants have at least a bachelor's degree, while socio-economic status varies based on family income and employment. Addiction patterns show many started drugs uses post-18, often with multiple substances, and varying addiction durations, notably 5-9 years or over 10 years. Factors contributing to addiction include family dynamics, psychological predispositions, and media exposure, with family addiction history and psychological factors like joy-seeking and teenage curiosity playing significant roles. Drug distribution mainly occurs through the black market and brokers, with substances like cigarettes, alcohol, hashish, and heroin prevalent. Long-term effects include psychological and physiological complications like anxiety, depression, and dependency. Regression analysis identifies correlations between predictor variables and addiction likelihood, with age, family income, employment status, and exposure age being significant factors, along with psychological elements like mental disturbance and teenage curiosity.
Conclusion: In conclusion, there is a paucity of studies addressing drug abuse in developing countries like Pakistan. Therefore, it is imperative to tackle the rapidly spreading issue of drug abuse and analyze its determinants. By doing so, we can enhance the quality of life for drug addicts, ultimately benefiting the productivity and well-being of the country
