The role of probiotics in inflammatory bowel disease: A narrative review
Abstract
Probiotics are live beneficial micro-organisms which regulate the GI tract flora and are found to be effective in relieving the symptoms of Inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis). We did a thorough search for relevant articles published between 2014 and 2024 using multiple databases. Our review focused specifically on Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium strains. The review highlighted that probiotics help alleviate symptoms and reduce inflammation in IBD. However, further research is needed for standardizing their use and to assess their long term safety, since this is a novel area of great interest.
